IIEST, Shibpur (Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur), is both placement and research specialized college located at Shibpur, in the district of Howrah, under West Bengal state in India. It is perceived as an Institute of National Importance under MHRD by the Government of India. Built-up in 1856, Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur (IIEST Shibpur) is the second established great engineering college in India after IIT Roorkee.

History of IIEST, Shibpur:

IIEST, Shibpur formerly known as Bengal Engineering College, established in the nineteen century when the industry was just starting.

The council of Education, Bengal decided to open Civil Engineering to fulfill the requirement of great trained Engineer for the public works department. So, at around 1843-44 civil engineering was created at Hindu College. This college gets the tag of Civil Engineering College on 24^th November 1856.

On 24^th January, 1857 Calcutta University was created by West Bengal Government. So, this college in May of 1857 came under the umbrella of Calcutta University.

In 1864 only two students passed as Bachelors of Civil Engineering, this is the first-time degree examination was taken place. This college (IIEST, Shibpur) merged with the Presidency University, Calcutta in 1865. After that 4 years, 1865 to 69 functioned as the CE department of Presidency university.

This college was shifted at Shibpur in Howrah (present campus) in the year of 1880. This year it was designated as Government College of Howrah in the premises of Bishop’s college and started to train Civil and Mechanical Engineering discipline. It also became fully residential from the year 1889.

In 1921 this college again changed as 'Bengal Engineering College' (popularly known as B. E. College).

During 1921-43, under the chairmanship of Sir R. N. Mukherjee, one of the most eminent ex-students of this college, several departments of this college were reorganized.

Mechanical Engineering students gave their first-degree examination in the year of 1932.

Electrical Engineering degree course was introduced during 1935-36 and then followed by Metallurgical Engineering in 1939. The Department of Humanities started in 1945 then Applied Mechanics in 1947, and Architecture also, after that Town and Regional Planning Department started in the year of 1949.

In the year of 2004 under the act of West Bengal assembly B.E college was transformed into Bengal Engineering and Science University, Shibpur. As science tag came, so M.Sc. degree started along with Engineering discipline.

In the year of 2014 on march Bengal Engineering and Science University, Shibpur was taken under the Government of India (MHRD) and it renamed as Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur as an Institute of National Importance.

In this college admission on undergraduate courses in an Engineering discipline (B. Tech) and Architecture (B.Arch.) both are granted through the JEE-Main examination conducted by National Testing Agency and postgraduate courses MTech. is granted through GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test of Engineering) and M.Sc. through JAM (Joint Admission Test). Ph.D. is granted through the college exam process (better check website of this college).

Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur, Library:

The name of the library is “Ramanujan Central Library”. The area of the library is 3000 square meters. The book collection consists of around 158,000 and 41,000 volumes of bound magazines and collections of documents such as patents, standards, technical reports and brochures.

The library has old and uncommon books and magazines from the nineteenth century. The library not just serves the data needs of personnel, specialists, and understudies at the establishment, yet also offers data administrations for analysts from neighboring colleges and research organizations.

This extensive library offers integrated LIBSYS-7 library management software, including WebOPAC and the latest hardware.

The library subscribes to seven themed collections from Elsevier Science Direct. The library is a member of E-SHODH SINDHU: Consortium of Electronic Resources for Higher Education (Ministry of Personnel Development Initiative from the Government of India).

Every day from 9 am to 12 pm it is opened (except holiday) and Saturday and Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm.

This college (Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur) has great placement scenario from the starting of this college but now recently after transforming as IIEST from BESU lots of new companies are now visiting the campus.

Great opportunity for placement and for research.

In the 3^rd year lots of students are now getting selected for Internship through on-campus and most of them are offered PPO (Pre-Placement Offer).

Placement for 4^th year students also are great.

Placement scenario is not good at all for M. tech but it’s increasing day by day.

In the year of 2019 IIEST Shibpur was ranked "19" among engineering colleges in India by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) and "36" overall. It was ranked 18th among engineering colleges in India in 2019.

According to the present developing the scenario in the Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur, the college will be placed at the top 10-15 within few years.
